Principal's Message & Weekly Updates

A huge thank you to everyone who helped organize and volunteer at our Trunk or Treat earlier today—it was such a fun event and wonderful to see so many Morello Park Elementary families coming together. A special shout-out goes to Rachel Zimmerman for taking the lead on planning and making the event such a huge success!

We are excited for one of our favorite MPE traditions this week: the Halloween Parade on Friday morning, immediately followed by Coffee with the Principal, Mayor, and Police Chief.
Friday Morning Schedule & Logistics
  • Student Arrival (8:00 AM): Students will arrive and head directly to the blacktop to line up with their classes. Note: Kindergarten and TK students will follow their regular morning drop-off procedures.
  • Parent Entry (8:15 AM): Parents will be walked in through the fire lane gate and gather in the center of the blacktop.
  • The Parade: All classes will circle around the blacktop twice so everyone gets a great view of the creative costumes!
  • After the Parade: Parents staying for Coffee with the Principal, Mayor, and Police Chief will head to the Multi-Use Room (MUR). All other visitors will exit campus so students can start their school day.
  • Parking: Parking is very limited. We kindly ask families to park off campus, walk, or bike on Friday morning.
Costume Guidelines
Students are welcome to wear their costumes to school for the day! Please review these school guidelines as you prepare:
  • No Masks: Please save full-face masks for trick-or-treating at home.  For safety reasons, we need to be able to see everyone's eyes and face.
  • No Weapons: Costume weapons of any kind (swords, blasters, magic wands that look like weapons, etc.) must stay at home.
  • Keep It Kid-Friendly: Please make sure costumes are free of blood, gore, or scary elements.
  • Bathroom-Friendly: Choose a costume your child can easily undo and put back on independently when using the restroom.
  • All-Day Comfort: Students will wear their costumes all day long and will not be changing at school, so please ensure they are comfortable for sitting, walking, and playing!
We can't wait to celebrate together on Friday morning!

Soaring Into Success

Attendance Update

MPE Attendance Weekly Stat: 97%

Our Average Daily Attendance is holding strong at 97% - thank you MPE Eagles for showing up!  We received new posters this week for our classrooms - when a class has 100% attendance where everyone was on time, the teacher will put the poster on the door or window.  I walk by and give the class a feather for their attendance to add to their totals for a whole class reward.  It helps us remember to celebrate everyone being here for the day and ready to learn.  So far, our 3rd grade has had consistently our best attendance and Tuesdays have been our strongest whole school day of the week.

While our average daily attendance has been great, our Chronic Absenteeism rate is starting to rise.  We will be reaching out to families to schedule attendance meetings called SARTs and share resources to help improve attendance for students who have missed more than 10% of school days.  For the month of October, we are planning to focus our awards on students who have made the most improvement this month.  We will start distributing pride tickets and stickers during the first week of November to honor anyone who's made a strong improvement.

Nesting Notes

On Friday, I had the privilege of attending a regional conference focused on building strong TK and early childhood programs alongside all three of our TK teachers. Throughout the day, we dived deep into the brain science and theory behind storytelling and early literacy, learned about the vital role of play in early childhood education, and heard inspiring success stories from programs that have made tremendous strides in recent years. We came back energized with fresh ideas for our classrooms—and even got to experience some play-based learning firsthand (as you can see in the pictures below!).

What stood out to me most from our day together is just how lucky we are at Morello Park Elementary to have such an incredible TK team in Ms. Delamain, Ms. Winder, and Ms. Katayanagi. They are intelligent, creative, caring, and deeply passionate about quality early childhood education. The learning experiences they curate for our MPE TK students are already rich, and they will only grow richer following our day together. We cannot wait to put everything we learned into action!

A very special thank you to our amazing Para-Educators, our hard-working team back at MPE, and our District Curriculum team, all of whom helped make our attendance at Friday's conference possible.

Have a wonderful week ahead MPE!  We will see you at the Parade on Friday!
