Principal's Message & Weekly Updates

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual Halloween parade! It was incredible to see such a fantastic turnout and share in the pure joy of our students as they proudly showed off their costumes. We hope you enjoyed the celebration as much as we did!

Following the parade, we held a wonderful Coffee Talk with Mayor Zorn and Police Chief White, focusing primarily on traffic and safe streets around our community. They encouraged us to revisit October's Safe Streets Presentation, where you can leave comments detailing any local intersections or areas where you have safety concerns. Additionally, Mayor Zorn encouraged all families to download and use the Go Martinez app to quickly report any city issues needing attention.

Thursday, we enjoyed a very special schoolwide sing this week—be sure to scroll down to read more details about it in the Nesting section below!

Looking ahead, we have a busy and exciting November planned with Kindness Week celebrations, a Canned Food Drive, Ruby Bridge's Walk to School and many more fun plans to look forward to. We are especially thrilled to welcome back the Morello Park Dad’s Club for First Friday Recess this coming week!

This Wednesday, we will have a Wacky Wednesday to celebrate earning 350 feathers as a school!  Students can wear wacky hairstyles and socks to school for our schoolwide reward.  We are so proud of our Eagles for their great attendance, respectful behavior, and for showing kindness to others.

Coming up soon, we will have our first Buddy Classroom day on November 13th where Kindergarten-5th graders will have shared activities.  Each upper grade class is paired with a lower grade class and they meet 5 times throughout the year for fun activities.  Ms. Halstead organizes this program that has become a MPE tradition.  We love the way it helps us build community schoolwide.

As we start our week, I want to wish all of our MPE Families who celebrate Diwali a very happy and joyful celebration this coming weekend!

Attendance Update

MPE Attendance Weekly Stat: 98%

Halloween week was a great attendance week for us at MPE - we gained a percentage point and came in at 98%!  We hope we can keep it going throughout November.  Every student who improved in their attendance for the past month received a pride award and sticker on Thursday.  Congrats to our 161 Eagles who showed improvement!

As we enter holiday season, we want to encourage families to avoiding missing extra school days around holiday breaks.  Every school day is important and we want students to benefit from as much instructional time as possible.  If missing a day is unavoidable, please consider asking for an Independent Study from the office at least one week prior.

We know that anxiety and other mental health concerns can also have an impact on attendance.  We have a partnership with Daybreak Health for families who are looking for more support for their students.  Please see the information below:

Mental Health Support for Students Through Daybreak Health
We know that growing up comes with challenges, and sometimes kids need a little extra support! Daybreak Health offers virtual mental health therapy for children and teens ages 5–19, helping students navigate anxiety, stress, big emotions, friendships, and other social-emotional challenges.

Therapy sessions are available Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m., making it easier for families to find a time that works for them.

Interested in getting support for your child? Families can request services through Daybreak Health or reach out to the school for help with a referral. Once referred, families will receive a text and email with instructions on how to get started.

Nesting Notes

This past Thursday, our school gathered for a whole school sing after Walk and Talk celebrating Filipino American History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. Sharing music is one of the most powerful ways to build community, foster inclusion, and make sure every student feels welcomed and celebrated at MPE.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade students sang Bahay Kubo, a traditional Filipino folk song describing a small nipa hut surrounded by a bountiful vegetable garden. It is a joyful song celebrating community, family, and appreciation for the simple, everyday gifts of nature.

4th and 5th Grade students sang La Bamba, a traditional Mexican folk song originating from Veracruz. The piece is written in the son jarocho style, blending Spanish, Indigenous, and African musical influences.

At every assembly, we plan to incorporate grade-level music sharing so students can showcase what they have learned in music class and build confidence as performers.

Families will have opportunities later in the year to visit open classrooms and see our music education program in action. Families will also be invited to see student performances live at the end of the school year with formal grade level concerts.
