Principal's Message & Weekly Updates

Welcome back, Eagle family! What an incredible week we’ve had at Morello Park. Our very first Color Wars Friday was a huge success, with our 5th graders taking home the win with a stellar 97% participation rate! We also completed our first fire drill of the year smoothly, getting the entire school safely outdoors in under five minutes.

A warm thank you to everyone who dropped by for our first Principal’s Coffee on Friday morning—it was wonderful connecting with so many of you. We are also thrilled to have experienced our first week with our new music teacher, Ms. Firmin! What a beautiful sound it is hearing our students singing and having so much fun learning music.

Looking ahead, we can't wait to see all of our families on campus for Back to School Night this coming week. Thank you for your continued support in making this school year great!

Back to School Night:
Teachers will be presenting important classroom information and it is a great chance to get to know more about what your Eagle is learning. This event is for parents and caregivers only. See the Schedule Below:

5:00-5:30 - 3rd, 4th and 5th Class Presentations
5:35-5:55 - Principal's Talk and Intro of Staff in the MUR
6:00-6:30 - TK, K, 1st and 2nd Class Presentations

We will have livescan fingerprinting on site available for $72 through Advanta Scan. This is a one time cost and once approved, you will not have to do livescan again with MUSD. Be sure to bring your form, valid passport or ID and payment with you.

Site Council:
Our first 26-27 Site Council meeting will be on September 22nd at 3:15 in the library. It is open to all who would like to attend. Please vote on your parent representatives for the council at this link: SITE COUNCIL BALLOT

Picture Day is September 1st:
Please see the attached image for details. With this company, you do not order photos ahead of time.

Friday the 4th is a Minimum Day:
TK and K will end the day at 11 am and Grades 1-5 at 12 pm. Lunch is not served on minimum days. Students will have brunch/snack.

MEF Run:
I will be volunteering and then participating in Martinez Education Foundation’s Run for Education on Sunday, September 27th.  I’m hoping to recruit a group of MPE staff and families to wear your purple and join the group to walk, jog or run with me.  MEF raises important funds for us especially for the library and this is their main fundraiser of the year. Please join me at the race in your purple:  MEF Race Sign Up

Ice Cream Social:
Our annual Ice Cream Social and Tie Dye event is Tuesday, September 22, 2026, 4pm - 7:30pm. In preparation, we'd appreciate gathering some information from you by Thursday, 9/17. We hope to see you and your families there! If you plan to attend please click the link below to fill out the form so that we may have a better estimate of t-shirt sizes for the students.   (1 survey needed per student) -

Attendance Update

MPE Attendance

We had great attendance Monday-Thursday this week, above 96% - and have a two week trend of dropping on Fridays. Friday is an important school day! Please do your best to ensure your student is present -every school day counts.

Info about Independent Study:
Short-Term Independent Study (14 or fewer school days)
● If you know your student will be absent, you may request a Short-Term Independent Study agreement.
● To allow our staff adequate time to prepare materials and the formal agreement, please contact the school office and your child’s teacher at least one week (5 school days) before the planned absence begins.
● All assigned work must be completed and submitted by the due date established by the teacher, which is upon the student's return to school. Additional work may need to be made up when the student returns.
● If all work is completed satisfactorily, the absences will be marked as excused. If the work is not completed, the absences will be marked as unexcused, in accordance with district policy.
● Short Term Independent Study may only be used up to 15 cumulative school days per school year.
● Students with IEP’s are not able to receive services while on Independent Study.

Student Responsibilities
A student’s success in Independent Study depends on their commitment to completing the assigned work. An evaluation will be conducted to determine whether a student should continue in Independent Study if they miss assignments or fail to make satisfactory educational progress.

For any questions or to determine if Independent Study is the right option for your child, please contact the school office.

PTA Corner

Welcome to Our PTA!
Walk and Roll Wednesday
Now that we are walking and rolling to school every Wednesday, let’s keep up the momentum! Last week we had 171 participants, but I know we can do better than that! Exciting news: The Bike Family Festival 2026 is Sunday Sept 13th from 10-2pm at the DVC Overflow Parking Lot in Pleasant Hill. This is an event to support our families and kids who want to build confidence and skills on a bike! This one day event is a day of free family fun for everyone. There will be education stations, obstacle courses, booths, food trucks, music and prizes. It’s a day to learn more about biking at whatever level you are at. Check out all the information, pre-register and sign up to volunteer on the Walk N Roll website Bike Family Fest.

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!

One of our school’s favorite programs is kicking off—Eagle Reading!

Eagle Reading minutes will be due
September 1st–September 7th!
Any student who read during the months of June, July, and August and has a caregiver submit their reading minutes through the Google Form will earn a FREE BOOK!

A link to the Google Form will be sent out through ParentSquare on September 1st.
We can’t wait to get some new books into the hands of our Eagle Readers!

Coffee With the Principal
Thank you to PTA for helping me host our first Coffee with the Principal! We had a great turnout and discussed school culture/climate, communications, math and volunteering. Here is a link to the presentation from Friday's event: Coffee with the Principal Presentation

Joining is one of the easiest ways to support our MPE eagles! We encourage everyone to be a PTA member.

Nesting Notes

School Safety Drills:
Keeping students and staff safe is our top priority at MPE. We regularly practice fire drills and we use The Standard Response Protocol for emergency training. On Thursday morning, we will complete our annual Lockdown drill practice. Research shows that schools are safer in emergency situations when students have practiced emergency protocols and know what to do in different scenarios. We will ensure students know that this is only a drill and conduct the drill with care. I will send out a message later that day explaining what the drill involved in case your child wants to discuss it with you at home.

Math and Tutoring Resources:
At our Coffee on Friday, I walked families through some of the resources our new Math Curriculum has for parents and homework help. Check out parent resources at Eureka Math Families

If your child is in need of live homework help and you have a Contra Costa Library card, the libraries offer an excellent free service for live tutoring: Brainfuse from Contra Costa Library

I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead! I have had a great experience starting the school year and getting to know your Eagles. They are funny, brilliant and kind. Thank you for sharing them with us here at MPE!
