Principal's Message & Weekly Updates

Thank you to our amazing PTA and a special shoutout to Rachel Ruhe for organizing such a beautiful Gala event on Saturday night. It was wonderful to gather as a community, celebrate our school, and raise critical funds together. The money raised at the Gala directly supports our programs, curriculum, and classroom supplies. We would not be able to offer the rich experiences our students enjoy without your contributions and ongoing support.

Thank you to our newly formed Morello Park Dad's Club for setting up our First Friday Recess at the Field!  The students were so excited to play games on our field and get to interact with our Dad Volunteers.

As we move into this week, we are looking forward to strengthening our school-home connections through our upcoming caregiver-teacher conferences. These meetings are a valuable opportunity to collaborate with your child's teacher, celebrate progress, and align on goals for the year.

If you are new to having a child in elementary school, below are a few suggested questions to think about as you meet with your child's teacher:
Academic Progress
  • What are my child's core academic strengths, and what specific areas or skills need the most focus right now?
Socio-Emotional Growth
  • What behaviors or emotional strengths do you see in my child, and how do they handle set-backs or challenges during the school day?
Supporting Learning at Home
  • What is one specific academic skill or habit we can practice at home to support what you are teaching in class?
Thank you again for your partnership, dedication, and support of our school community. We look forward to seeing you at conferences this week!

Caregiver-Teacher Conferences, October 5th-9th Logistics:
We will have minimum days ending at 11 (TK/K) and 12 (1st-5th) every day this week for Caregiver-Teacher Conferences.  Make sure you have signed up for a time slot with your child's teacher.  After 12 pm, you may go directly to your student's classroom for your conference.  If your conference is before 12 pm, please sign in at the office before going to your classroom and get a visitor's sticker as we will still have students on campus. Conferences are for Caregivers only; students should not attend.

Friday, October 9th Spirit Day: Colors of Hispanic Heritage Day!
Our Student Council has planned a MPE Spirit Day Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, which continues through October 15th. On Friday, wear bright colors or colors from the flag of a Spanish-speaking country as we celebrate the many cultures, stories, and contributions recognized during Hispanic Heritage Month!

After School Safety at the Park:
This week we had a serious injury occur as students were climbing the trees at the park next to MPE.  Tree-climbing always comes with some risk and the trees at the city park are not able to handle the weight of people climbing them.  Please talk to your child about staying safe, walking directly home, and not climbing the trees.  Thank you for your support!

Attendance Update

MPE Attendance Weekly Stat: 96.7%

Caregiver-Teacher conferences are a great time to discuss attendance habits with your child's teachers.  For families of students who have missed more than 10% of school days this year, I have given your teachers attendance reports and organizers to help think through next steps at your conference.  We hope this will be the start of a conversation about how MPE can support your family in building positive attendance habits.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need support and would like help making an attendance plan.

Welcome to Our PTA!
Morello Park Elementary PTA Trunk or Treat!
Join us for a spooktacular afternoon of family fun at Morello Park Elementary on Sunday, October 25, from 3:00–5:00 PM! MPE families are invited to dress up, enjoy decorated trunks, and celebrate Halloween together. The event is free, and costumes are encouraged!
Help us fill our Candy Monster! We are collecting candy donations in the school office to make sure we have plenty of treats for our Trunk or Treat event. Every donation helps make the afternoon extra sweet!
In case you missed the reel:
Want to decorate a trunk? Sign up using the QR code on the event flyer or the link below and help make this year's Trunk or Treat extra spooktacular!
We can't wait to see you there!

Homecoming Parade, October 9th:
We need our Morello community to help bring the Underworld to life, and there are THREE ways your family can get involved!

1. MAKE A PIECE OF THE FLOAT
Not sure where to start? We created a Float Reference Guide with pictures, suggested sizes, materials, and ideas for each piece.

2. COME TO OUR FLOAT CRAFTING DAY
Wednesday, October 7
1:30–4:30 PM
Morello MUR
Let us know you're coming by signing up on the craft day helper on our sign up list!

3. WALK IN THE HOMECOMING PARADE!
Any Morello student is welcome to walk with our float in the Homecoming Parade.

Friday, October 9
Meet at Alhambra High School Parking Lot
Arrive by 2:30 PM

Students can wear their Morello gear, dress as a Hercules character, throw on a toga, or just come ready to represent Morello! Students will be walking from Alhambra High School to Downtown Martinez (about a mile walk) so make sure they're wearing comfortable shoes.

IMPORTANT: All students participating in the parade MUST  have a signed permission slip. Please return permission slips to the school office or your child’s teacher by Wednesday, October 7.

Nesting Notes

October is another packed month here at Morello Park and a wonderful opportunity to connect with others outside of the classroom.  I've included a graphic of all of our upcoming events for your reference.  We hope to see you there!

Along with our school October events, Contra Costa Libraries have a great reading initiative program for both kids and adults this month.  We'd love to see our MPE Eagles participate in Hallow-Read.  Check out the details at this link.  Adults can participate in the Read Contra Costa event from October 1 through November 14th.  It is a great way to model excitement for reading with our students.

Mondays and Fridays at lunch are my favorite time of the week at MPE.  On Mondays, we honor students who won their class Eagle Pride drawings for the week.  Students earn raffle tickets for following the Eagle Code - Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Kind.  Every week, each class has two winners who come pick a prize from the prize cart and have their picture taken to be displayed at lunch time.  Last week, we also added extra winners by picking tickets out of our new Bingo spinner.  With our reward system, it gives us an opportunity to reinforce our Eagle Code and work towards being a Kind, Respectful school community where everyone belongs.

At Friday lunches, we honor school spirit by giving out Pride Tickets for students who wear Purple or their Class Color (on Color Wars days).  We call a new number each week and if that person is wearing purple, they get a ticket.  I wear my special Friday Eagle hat and we all have an opportunity to celebrate being a part of MPE together.  It has been so much fun getting to build community this way with your students and I hope they look forward to Mondays and Fridays as much as I do.
